Kitty 2nd July 2021

My memories of Bethy It’s taken me this long to gather my memories and find the right words for Bethy. From the little firecracker of a toddler who came into our lives nearly 11 years ago to the quietly confident, principled young person she became, Bethy has been a great friend to Kitty for all this time. Their friendship has been a joy to behold over the years; from wild times spent at toddler group, Bethy as the bigger girl always being one step ahead to finding them sitting ‘together’ on Zoom in companionable silence over the last year. Theirs was a very special friendship. Every time we go to the park I see them sitting on the swings chatting (probably Harry Potter business) moving gently back and forth. I see Bethy outside my front gate having organised a sledging expedition, making sure they were all 2 metres apart as they walked through the village pulling their sledges behind them. Kitty talks about the games they played on the trampoline and the elaborately complex worlds of Potter that they created. The shoe box that was delivered at Christmas containing countless Harry Potter artefacts made lovingly by Bethy for Kitty; a wand, a letter from Hogwarts, an odd sock, a Hufflepuff banner and so many other things; adored back then and treasured now. They knitted scarves for each other in their respective house colours and loved seeing each other wearing them. Their trip around the village to see the advent windows last year and the excitement and chat when they came back. We talk about Bethy every day and she is very much part of our day. We’ve learnt the words to the songs from La La Land and sing them often. We are making different choices because of Bethy, because of the quietly amazing person that she was and we are thankful that we had her.
