Memories of Bethy Smith from Cotherstone Primary School: Bethy was kind, caring, passionate about environmental issues and a friend to all. We remember her creativity and imagination from an early age and that she showed compassion for those around her. We have many examples of her caring nature being demonstrated but felt that this one was a good way to sum up what we saw from her everyday that she was here: When Bethy and her classmates visited Robinwood Outdoor Activity Centre, they – as many before them – had heard the stories about the legendary ‘Piranha Pool’. Anxiously waiting their turn to cross the pool, Bethy, who was no less fearful than any of the others about the unseen, escaped and crazed piranhas in the pool, gently explained to each one of her friends that they could do it. No-one moved. Bethy then showed them the way by being the first to get in and cross and, though clearly visibly and audibly concerned by the potential ankle-nibbling, she offered words of encouragement to the rest of her team who all made it across in her wake. This was just one of the many, many times we witnessed Bethy’s incredible, selfless personality. Bethy leaves us a legacy of encouraging us to strive to be the best version of ourselves and to think of others and the environment. We feel incredibly lucky to have had Bethy in our lives and we will ensure Bethy’s legacy lives on in our school. All the staff at Cotherstone Primary School
